Friendship Botanic Gardens will host a special free educational program dedicated to everyone’s favorite pollinator pals: butterflies! Horticulturalist Dolly Foster will discuss butterfly gardening, pollinator conservation, and how you can attract these beautiful “flying flowers” to your own backyard! This is a remarkable opportunity for families to learn how to help boost butterfly populations through hands-on citizen science.

Audiences can experience live butterflies up-close as we release newly hatched monarchs into our specially designed butterfly garden. Children can make and take home free butterfly crafts.

Hypertufa Workshop with Janice Casper

Hypertufa Trough Class with Janice Casper
Trough gardens are ideal places to display tiny horticultural treasures: dwarf conifer, alpines, miniature succulents, and even a small fairy garden.  Antique stone troughs from Britain are prohibitively expensive, but it is easy to make a convincing substitute using a mixture of portland cement, perlite and peat moss.  Hypertufa troughs can be left outside in the winter and are light weight once they are dry.
Janice Casper owner of North Range Garden Design will conduct a class on making a trough at Friendship Botanic Gardens in Michigan City on Saturday, April 29 from 10am-Noon. Cost is $40 which covers the cost of the materials to make the troughs.
Please bring rubber gloves and two forms/molds that you would like to make your troughs in.  One trough should be 2 inches smaller than the larger one.  A good starting box is a shoe box or plastic container such as a small dish pan.  Not too big to carry safely. For questions about materials, please contact Janice Casper at 219.204.0494.
Registration Info: Call 219.8789.885 or email info@friendshipgardens.org to register. Please provide your name and address and phone number in the email or voicemail. Payment can be made on our website or you may mail a check made payable to Friendship Botanic Gardens and mailed to PO Box 8834, Michigan City IN 46361.
