birdwatchingBring along your binoculars and telescopes for birdwatching. Birding is a popular hobby and we have a fantastic place to do it. The gardens are filled with numerous trails that wind through woods, many are right along Trail Creek. Forest and water come together in this beautiful valley in Michigan City, IN. With our naturally forested landscape and earthen trails, we have become a retreat for many species of birds along the Lake Michigan Coastline. Many of Northwest Indiana's most beautiful species can be seen and heard on the grounds, you just need to listen for them and have a sharp eye.

Bird Species Found in the Gardens

loonBirdwatching is spectacular here, because of the variety of species the Gardens have to offer. The lakeshore is close by, and many birds visit from its shores. We have ruby crowned kinglets, nuthatches, vireos, indigo buntings, and many species of Heron. You may see huge Turkey Vultures, a falcon or one of numerous species of hawk. Sandpipers, Hummingbirds, Swallows, Jays, Woodpeckers, Warblers, Mockingbirds and Thrashers are all known to visit the Gardens. In abundance you will find Cardinals, Blackbirds and Doves, but on a lucky day, you may glimpse Orioles and Finches fluttering about. On the water you will see a large variety of wildlife, including many of the most beautiful species of geese, ducks and swans.

No matter what type of birding you like to do, we are sure to satisfy. Our position near the lake and our forested areas combine with the creeks running through to create the perfect natural environment for some of the most spectacular bird species found in Michiana.

Come and walk the trails at the Gardens to experience the nature all around you. As mentioned earlier, bring along your birding gear, as you may want a closer look at some of the beautiful avian species you will encounter. Of the several activities to partake in at the Gardens, birdwatching is one of the great ones.
