If you are looking for a place to enjoy family activities, look no further! We have around 3 miles of trails for hiking or dog walking, and many themed gardens to experience. We also have many programs scheduled every year that are perfect for you and your entire family to enjoy. Our Educational Programs are FREE of charge and Wednesdays are our half-price admission day ($4). Below you will find some of the activities that are always available to you at the gardens. To join us for our scheduled activities, visit our events page for a list of all family activities and other Garden events.
ArcelorMittal Children’s Garden
Kids can simulate drawing groundwater up from the earth with a hydraulic hand pump before watching it trickle down a 16 foot gold miner’s sluiceway. In the spring, the nearby garden beds will blossom with flowers and herbs selected to provide a feast for the senses of smell, touch and sight. Relax on the swing or use the slide, everyone can enjoy this area. This installment is only the beginning, and we can’t wait to unveil what we have in store for phases 2 and 3. This ongoing project wouldn’t have been possible without ArcelorMittal’s generosity and enduring commitment to the Northwest Indiana community. Click here for more information. Thanks ArcelorMittal!
Walking and Hiking Trails
Come and experience the Gardens' abundant nature and wildlife along the 3 miles of dog friendly walking and hiking trails throughout our 105 acres. Trails take visitors through rugged, wooded hillsides and also through our lovely garden and meadow areas. Dogs must be leashed at all times. For a list of trails and a map, visit our trails page.
Flora and Fauna
Flora is a term for plants and fauna that is used to classify all of the animals in a specific region. Wildlife is abundant at the Gardens and many of our flora species have signs placed for you, providing details that explain the type of plants found in our region. Always be on the lookout for the many animals that can be seen all over the grounds. Many people visit the Gardens so that they can be a little closer to the natural world. We have listed some of the bird species that can be found on the grounds, so keep your eyes and ears open for them!
Trail Creek Fishing
Friendship Botanic Gardens members can take advantage of spectacular fishing opportunities along the banks of Trail Creek (valid fishing license required). Nearly 2000 feet of Trail Creek winds through the Friendship Botanic Gardens grounds, and trout and salmon can be found in abundance during their spawning seasons. To learn more about all the benefits of a Friendship Botanic Gardens membership, please see our member page.
